Marriage equality is finally becoming a reality in Colorado. To date, 24 courts across the country have all found these discriminatory marriage bans to be unconstitutional. In response to recent Colorado court rulings, clerks in at least three Colorado counties have begun to issue marriage licenses to loving, committed same-sex couples who simply want to protect their families.
Yet Colorado’s Attorney General, John Suthers, continues to hold out against the inevitable. Yesterday, our Governor, John Hickenlooper, had this to say about it:
“I remain a strong advocate for marriage equality,” Hickenlooper said. “The decision on marriage by Judge Crabtree puts Colorado on the right side of history.
“I have urged the attorney general not to appeal Judge Crabtree’s ruling. If he feels he needs to continue to defend this discriminatory law, I urge him to seek final resolution at the Colorado Supreme Court.”
It’s time for Colorado to embrace the freedom to marry for every citizen of our state, and it’s time for opponents of equality to admit they’ve lost. Thank you, Gov. Hickenlooper, for your leadership at this important moment.
