GOLDEN — There are “good numbers” of candidates from around the country in the running for Jefferson County Public Schools’ top position, including superintendents, assistant superintendents and “nontraditionals,” according to the firm heading the search.

Bill Newman, with Ray and Associates, told the Jeffco school board Thursday evening that additional candidates, with even “more prominent jobs,” are likely to submit applications by Friday — the deadline for candidates to apply for the post.

“We still have some people applying with good jobs already,” Newman said.

The board will review applications May 5, and candidate interviews are scheduled for May 9 and 10. Newman would not disclose how many candidates have applied but said he would probably have a specific number for the board next week.

The district is seeking a new leader after longtime Superintendent Cindy Stevenson’s departure two months ago. Stevenson was set to retire in June after more than 12 years at the helm of the nearly 86,000-student school district but left early because of friction between her and the new conservative majority on the board that she said made it difficult for her to lead.

Newman on Thursday said that slightly more than half of the candidates responded to direct recruiting by his firm, while the rest responded to posted advertisements for the position.
