Longmont Public Safety Chief Mike Butler was recognized for creativity and innovation at a statewide police conference in early July.

According to the department, he received the 2017 Ralph Smith Professional Innovation Award at the Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police in Colorado Springs.

The award recognizes chiefs using creativity and innovation in building partnerships within the community.

Butler was recognized for his work in the Belonging Revolution project, restorative justice, the Angel Initiative, the EDGE program and reducing gang activity in the city.

Butler also has been known to have visited mobile home parks, apartment complexes and other marginalized neighborhoods on Sundays over the last three years with Dan Benavidez to encourage people in the community.

The department in a Facebook post said it is developing a plan to have all Public Safety members walking neighborhoods.
