IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo. — A legislative proposal to rename the Twin Tunnels on Interstate 70 has passed the state legislature.

In March, Colorado lawmakers proposed a bill to rename the I-70 Twin Tunnels near Idaho Springs as Veterans Memorial Tunnels to honor those who have served the country.

On Wednesday, Colorado Department of Transportation spokeswoman Amy Ford confirmed to FOX31 Denver that the legislation had passed.

Ford said CDOT plans to put up official signage after the westbound construction plan is complete, and the department intends to have an opening ceremony for the project at the end of the year.

As construction on the tunnels continues, CDOT will start to integrate the use of the new name, said Ford. She added that, in an effort to not confuse motorists during heavy construction times, both names will be used until the project is complete.
