A former high school coach has been arrested on suspicion of sex crimes involving a teenage student.

David Hurd, 38, who was a band choreographer and coach at Air Academy High School from 2004 until early this year, has been arrested on suspicion of sexual exploitation of a child and obscenity, according to an El Paso County Sheriff’s Office media release.

The case came to light in early February, the sheriff’s office said, and Hurd was arrested Friday, the same day a search warrant was served on his Denver-area home.

Hurd is suspected of having an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old student.

“Hurd is involved in multiple marching band activities throughout the country as a consultant and choreographer,” the sheriff’s office said.

Investigators are concerned that there may be additional victims.

Hurd, who worked as an independent contractor, passed a background check before his hiring in 2004, a school district spokeswoman said Monday.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 719-390-5555.
