Denver Public Schools will receive nearly $7 million from a new federal grant program that seeks to invest in workforce preparation.

The grants, or Youth Career Connect awards, will disperse a total of $107 million to 24 agencies, including school districts and workforce preparation organizations, according to information from the White House.

The grant program, created by the Department of Labor and Department of Education, encourages partnerships of schools and workforce organizations to prepare more students for high-growth jobs that H1B visa holders are filling.

The grant funds awarded to Denver Public Schools are intended to expand STEM — science, technology, engineering and math — programs at eight schools. The money also will be used to provide more career fairs and summer industry academies.

DPS is the only grant recipient in Colorado.
